week of bounty 26-05-2009
department:  Foundation Provisioning (Engineering and the Built Environment) contact person:  Mrs E (Lizette) Viljoen

The Engineering Foundation Unit has partnered TUT's neighbouring communities of Danville and Booysens to participate in the Week of Bounty from Sunday, 24 May to 31 May 2009. This annual initiative encourages people to donate unused goods from their homes and businesses to assist and uplift needy people in this area.

Lizette Viljoen of the Engineering Foundation Unit, says the initiative will bring joy to many people. “We urge TUT staff and students to look around purposefully in the next few days and to identify things they don’t use or can do without. They must make a purposeful decision to give these things to those in need. Anything they don’t use – clothing, food, blankets, etc., as well as money they donate, will be used where the need is the greatest,” she added.

The Engineering Foundation Unit in Room 22, Building 3, Pretoria Campus, will be the drop-off point for all donations, which will then be forwarded to churches in the community, and through them, distributed to those in need.

Lizette says there are people available to fix broken appliances and mend clothing where required. If TUT members wish to donate large items that need to be fetched from their homes, arrangements will be made.

“The Week of Bounty can undoubtedly make a significant difference in the community. Engineering students are becoming involved and we urge other students and staff to join them. I encourage everyone to participate annually. It does not matter how small an item is; it could make a big difference in another person’s life”, Lizette concluded.
