Yannick Kala Konga, a B Tech: Electrical Engineering student, and Comfort Bathabile Ndala, a B Tech: Operations Management student, have been awarded scholarships for 2010 by the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships Programme. They intend to study M Tech: Electrical Engineering and M Tech: Operations Management, respectively. The Mandela Rhodes Scholarships Programme is part of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, which was established in 2003 as an equal partnership between the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Rhodes Trust. The central purpose of the Mandela Rhodes Foundation is to build exceptional leadership capacity in Africa.
Initially, TUT nominated four candidates and submitted their applications and supporting documents to the Mandela Rhodes Foundation. Three were selected to proceed to the next stage of the selection. Of the three candidates, two were ultimately awarded the scholarships.
Ms Theresa Laaka Daniels, Scholarships Manager at the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships, congratulated TUT on the calibre of candidates that the University had sent.
“The quality of the short-listed candidates was outstanding and the Selection Committee had a very tough task in selecting the 2010 scholars. A total of 30 Mandela Rhodes scholars have been elected,” she said.
According to Dr Prins Nevhutalu, TUT’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Partnerships), the award is a major achievement for the students and the University.
“On behalf of the University, I want to congratulate Yannick and Comfort on this achievement. At TUT, we really empower people. We are proud of the two recipients of the Mandela Rhodes Scholarships and wish them well in their intended studies,” he concluded.
The terms and conditions of the scholarship and an acceptance form will be sent to the successful candidates. Once they have signed and returned the form to the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, details of the financial aspects of the scholarship will be sent to the University and the scholars.
