The Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment brought together its students to participate in a Junk Yard Challenge that took place at the Pretoria Campus swimming pool before last term’s recess.
More than 50 groups, each consisting of students from differentdepartments, took part in the competition which challenged students to give all they had. They were put together to integrate the theoretical work to practical design of mechanical machinery or device. Students had to use scrap material to build the device and the adjudicators looked at the safety of the machinery. Each group had to work on a limited budget of R400 each.
Izendu Aghachi of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the co-ordinator of the event, said that was an opportunity for students to be exposed to real life projects. “I am really glad many students participated in this challenge. It really boosted their confidence and self-esteem. Students need such challenges to keep them on their feet,” she said.
Biggy Maseru, an Electrical Engineering student, showed so much enthusiasm at the event. “We have been preparing and testing day and night. I am glad the faculty decided to introduce such a challenge to its students. The experience derived from such activities is invaluable to us,” he explained.
The competition winners will be announced on Monday, 12 October 2009.
