Students enrolled for the new Three-Dimensional Design programme offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering are flying the Department’s flag high. Three of its shining stars are semi-finalists in the House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition.
Their designs of task lamps are featured on a four-page spread in the November edition of the trendy magazine.
The House and Leisure Green Designers at Woolworths competition aims to promote an emerging generation of eco-design stars.
Andrew Mossop, Rudi Snyman and Hennie Weideman, all second -year Three-Dimensional Design students, were tasked with creating eco-friendly task lamps that can live next to a bed or in a study. They were assisted by Pierre Swanepoel of StudioMas and their lecturer, Michael Wythe. The designs needed to have a look that appeals to a wide market.
From the 21 semi-finalists, ten finalists will be selected by Woolworths and House and Leisure. The finalists will be assigned a production mentor to source the most cost-effective and eco-friendly way to manufacture their product in bulk.
Each of these finalists will be required to present his or her findings at a formal judging session where a winner and runners-up will be chosen.
An exclusive awards ceremony will take place at the Design Indaba held in February next year. Thereafter selected items will be produced as a range to be sold in Woolworths stores. |
